What is a TPD claim?

Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) is an insurance benefit that can pay you a lump sum if you're no longer able to work because of illness, injury or disability. A great many Australians carry this cover inside their superannuation without ever realising it.

Where a medical condition or injury has stopped you returning to your usual job โ€” or to any role you're suited to by training and experience โ€” a TPD claim may be worth exploring.

Who may be eligible?

Policies differ, but you may have a pathway if:

  • illness, injury or disability has stopped you working
  • your condition is expected to be ongoing or permanent
  • you held super cover when you stopped work, or when your condition began
  • you meet your fund's particular definition of "permanent disability" โ€” which varies between policies

Don't write yourself off too soon. TPD definitions vary a lot between funds and policies. A knock-back from one provider doesn't mean another won't apply. A Free Claim Check helps clarify what your policies actually say.

Conditions people often claim for

TPD claims are pursued for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and PTSD
  • cancer and chronic illness
  • back, neck, joint and musculoskeletal injuries
  • workplace and motor vehicle injuries
  • stroke, heart conditions and neurological disorders
  • fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and autoimmune conditions

That list isn't the whole picture โ€” if your condition affects your ability to work, it's worth checking.
